How much, I wondered, of the work that any of us do—myself included—is actually useful. I remembered how much I enjoyed being a beekeeper, because at least then when I finished the year I had something that someone could eat, something necessary to survival. How much of what any of us do helps us to be human and humane beings, and how much simply makes work, gives us something to do?
